Manado, North Sulawesi (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) distributed 2,000 land certificates to local inhabitants of North Sulawesi, here on Thursday.

He was happy to hear that the administrative costs of the certificates were borne by the North Sulawesi Provincial Government, Jokowi said.

The 2,000 certificates are for land plots located in 11 districts and municipalities, namely Manado (70 certificates), Bitung (50), Tomohon (150), North Minahasa (500), Minahasa (130), Southeast Minahasa (150), South Minahasa Selatan (300), Bolaang Mongondow (300), North Bolaang Mongondow (50), East Bolaang Mongondow (200), and Kotamobagu (100).

The country should provide 126 million certificates to the people, the President said.

In 2015, however, only 46 certificates were issued, meaning that some 80 million plots of land had no certificates. If only 500 thousand certificates were issued annually, it would take 160 years to issue all remaining certificates.

Therefore, the government had decided to launch a program to accelerate the issuance of land certificates to the public.

The land certificates were free of charge as the administration fee at Rp300 thousand per certificate was paid by funds allocated in the province's Regional Budget (APBD), North Sulawesi Governor Olly Dondokambey said.

Earlier, the Agrarian and Spatial Planning Ministry said that it planned to register 10 million new plots of land this year, one million more than the initial target of nine million set in 2015.

In 2018, the ministry exceeded land certification target by 133 percent, certifying 9.3 million plots of land, Agrarian and Spatial Planning Minister Sofyan Djalil said.
