Manado, N Sulawesi, March 29 (Antaranews Sulut) - North Sulawesi Governor Olly Dondokambey has proposed kolintang, a traditional musical instrument of Minahasa made of wood, to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to be acknowledged as a world cultural heritage.

"We want kolintang to be included in UNESCO`s cultural heritage list similar to batik and angklung earlier," North Sulawesi`s Chief Executive of Cultural Office, Fery R. J. Sangian, S. Sos stated here on Thursday.

The local government is serious about protecting Kolintang by proposing it through letter numbered 430/551/Sekr-DKD addressed to Director of Heritage and Cultural Diplomacy, Directorate General of Culture, and Education and Culture Ministry of Indonesia.

The North Sulawesi provincial government has supported and approved, through the letter, for further proposal by assigning a compiling team and support community.

This team will prepare and complete the proposed document that is held by the Culture Directorate General of Education and Culture Minister of Indonesia.

In addition, some 12 support groups have been formed, comprising the North Sulawesi provincial government and the National Association of Insan Kolintang, he remarked.

The team coach is Provincial Secretary Edwin Silangen and the Responsible Division is Sangian, S. Sos.

"The team has also held a coordination meeting to discuss the technical and administrative requirements to support Governor Dondokambey`s efforts to patent kolintang music with the UNESCO," he added.
