Manado, N Sulawesi, Aug 29 (Antara) - People in a number of districts of North Sulawesi have been alerted of increase in activities of four live volcanoes.

The Center of Volcanology and Mitigation of Geological Disaster (PVMBG) has warned people or visitors away from Mt Lokon near the city of Tomohon, Mt Soputan in the districts of Southeast and South Minahasa, Mt Karangetang in the regency of Sitaro Islands and Mt Awu in the regency of Sangihe Islands.

"People living around the volcanoes and visitors to those places should heed the warning of the PVMBG," an official of the district office of the agency Christian Laotongan said here on Sunday.

The four volcanoes had been placed in high alertness status of Level III before they began to calm down on Sunday that the PVMBG gave them the state of alertness of Level II.

Mt Lokon was the last to have its status reduced to Level II as it indicated volcanic tremors.

PVMBG has issued a warning for the local people or visitors to stay away from a danger area of 1.5 kilometers from the craters of Mt Lokon , Mt Soputan and Mt Karangetang and 3 kilometers from the crater of Mt Awu.

"The warning is important to prevent people from the danger of explosions that could come any time," Christian said. ***4*** (AS/f001)
