Manado, N Sulawesi, July 30 (Antara) - Six countries grouped in the Sub Regional Meeting on Foreign Terrorist Fighters and Cross Border Terrorism (SRM FTF CBT) will seek to team up with social media to locate terrorists.
"One point agreed at the meeting is to seek cooperation among the six countries and companies offering social media, video file sharing and messaging services," Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Law, Security and Political Affairs Wiranto said here on Sunday.
Wiranto opened the first meeting here on Saturday of the six countries - Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei Darusalam, Australia and New Zealand.
"The social media companies will help us in finding the whereabouts of terrorists or in preventing their action," the retired army general said.
The government will fully utilize the role of social media companies to prevent the spread of radicalism and terrorism, he added.
He said the cooperation with social media companies is a counter measure against terrorists who also used social media in seeking to recruit sympathizers.
The six countries would invite social media companies to take part in the fight against terrorism and radicalism to create peaceful and tolerant society, he said.
The Islamic State of Iraq and Surya (ISIS) also uses social media to seek to recruit young sympathizers to strengthen their networks, he said.
"Therefore, the same method should be used as a counter measure to protect our young people from falling into their trap," he said, adding although it has been given the label of terrorist group, ISIS could still attract sympathizers among Indonesians.
Wiranto said all countries are concerned with the threat of terrorism and growing radicalism, therefore, many countries including the United States, have offered help to stamp out terrorism from Indonesia.
He said the G20 countries of which Indonesia and the United States are members, have also expressed commitment to the fight against terrorism.
"Therefore, we believe all countries would agree to cooperate in the effort to eliminate terrorism especially in Southeast Asia," he said.
He said the cooperation includes in the exchange of intelligence information, and in seeking to stop flow of funds to terrorist organizations. ***2*** (AS)
