Manado, N. Sulawesi, Oct 13 (Antara) - Sam Ratulang airport in Manado, North Sulawesi, has served 1.9 million passengers as of the third quarter of 2016, marking positive growth, Sam Ratulangi General Manager Nugroho Jati said here, Thursday.

"Last year, in the same period, the number of passengers we served was 1.5 million. We've had positive growth of 27 percent," Jati remarked.

The increasing number, he added, is mostly due to the foreign tourist arrivals, most of whom want to enjoy national and international events.

The number of foreign passengers amounted to 67 thousand, a 56 percent increase compared to last year's 42 thousand.

The passenger number growth is also attributable to chartered flights from China being launched on July 4, 2016.

Meanwhile, Jati noted, the number of domestic passengers has also grown to 1.8 million people, a 25 percent increase compared to last year's 1.4 million.

Lion Group dominates the flight schedule with 22 routes.

The volume of cargo transported by air has also increased during the third quarter of 2016 to 9.5 million kilograms, increasing by seven percent compared to last year's volume of 8.8 million kilograms.

Overall, Jati said, the number of passengers and volume of cargo served at Sam Ratulangi airport have been growing rapidly.
